A root-cause holistic treatment solution

Sarah takes a holistic approach, considering the body and mind as an integrated health system. By delving into the root cause of reproductive disorders, even those classified as “unexplained infertility,” she addresses underlying deficiencies and dysfunction of various internal systems and substances and also specific gynaecological disorders including clinical diseases such as endometriosis, PCOS and male factor sperm-related dysfunction.

“Unexplained” infertility

By focussing on the body’s organ systems and energies, rather than just treating symptoms, reproductive acupuncture identifies and treats internal functioning problems that may be missed by Western medicine but can be easily diagnosed and treated with TCM. Hence it is very successful at treating cases where an “unexplained” diagnosis has been made.

Sarah’s personalised treatments target hormonal factors, stress-related issues, ovarian dysfunction, fallopian tube problems, uterine conditions, cervical factors, menstrual irregularities, and recurrent miscarriage. Acupuncture and TCM offer effective solutions, regulating menses, balancing hormones, and improving fertility health.

The key organ networks associated with gynaecology, fertility, and conception—namely, the Spleen, Liver, Kidney, and Heart system energies—are susceptible to dysfunction due to various internal and external factors. In TCM, we understand that the body is an interconnected network of energies, where the organs are interrelated and interdependent, following the fundamental concept of Yin and Yang. By addressing the root cause of the condition, which varies among individuals, we aim to restore the body to a state of perfect health, aligning it with its original design of optimal function.

Acupuncture and TCM offers effective solutions for various hormonal factors that may affect fertility, including those related to stress or age. By addressing these imbalances, we can optimise the function of the male and female reproductive system and increase the chances of successful conception and a viable pregnancy.

Ovulatory dysfunction

Ovarian factors such as POI anovulation and polycystic ovaries (PCOS/PCOD). Through targeted treatments, we work to restore proper ovulation and promote healthy ovarian function including working towards healthier ovaries and healthier eggs.

Fallopian tube issues

In cases where fallopian tube factors, such as blockages or infections, pose challenges to fertility, acupuncture and TCM can offer supportive treatment options. By addressing these issues, tubal health and functionality is improved.

Uterine factors

Disorders like uterine fibroids, a “cold” uterus, or a thin endometrium, can also be effectively treated with acupuncture and TCM. Our holistic approach aims to restore uterine health by encouraging blood flow and create an optimal environment for implantation and pregnancy.

  • Cervical factors, such as habitual infections that damage sperm, can be addressed through treatment. By promoting a healthy cervical environment, we support the viability and mobility of sperm, enhancing the chances of successful conception and viable pregnancy.
  • Menstrual factors, including irregular periods and endometriosis. By regulating the menstrual cycle and reducing inflammation, we strive to create a favourable environment for fertility.
  • Lastly, for couples experiencing recurrent miscarriage, which may also be related to poor sperm quality, we provide comprehensive treatment and support. There can be various underlying factors, but each is addressed and treated in full, for a more viable pregnancy and happy, healthy baby.

Testimonials for Sarah Clark, Fertility Acupuncturist

“I first visited Sarah after she was recommended by a friend. I had been through a horrific situation where I had lost a baby in my 18th week of pregnancy. I visited Sarah a few months after. I had never tried Acupuncture before but have to say my treatment not only nourished my body but also helped me manage the situation (as much as I could) mentally. I remember walking out after treatment and for the first time thinking I could get through this awful time. I fell pregnant again soon after which was totally unexpected, but seeing Sarah gave me more faith in this pregnancy and the prospects of a happier outcome, which it has healthy little girl due tomorrow!!!

Supporting your ART protocol (IVF / IUI / ICSI)

Many couples facing fertility issues have successfully conceived through IVF, IUI, or ICSI having been assisted with acupuncture where previous cycles have failed. Acupuncture and TCM treatment can significantly increase the chances of successful conception and a viable pregnancy.

Types of Assisted Reproductive Techniques

  • IUI: Sperm is placed in the uterus using a catheter, aiding fertilization by providing more sperm access to the egg. Requires healthy ovulation and open fallopian tubes.
  • IVF: Eggs and sperm are combined outside the uterus, and resulting embryos are transferred to the uterus for implantation.
  • ICSI: a process where greater quality sperm is selected from a sample.

The role of acupuncture in ART

IVF and similar ART procedures often overlook the quality of eggs, sperm, and gynaecological health, leading to a high rate of miscarriage because many of the foundational health issues are ignored. Acupuncture and TCM focus on gynaecological and fertility health thereby supporting the program’s effectiveness and promoting healthy embryo growth. Benefits of acupuncture during ART include preparing the body, improving follicle stimulation, enhancing egg quality, thickening the endometrium, and assisting embryo attachment.

Preparing for IVF and IUI:

Starting acupuncture and TCM treatment at least 3 months before the procedure is best to be able to make real changes prior to embarking on the medicated treatment.

For females, acupuncture regulates body functions, improves ovarian function, and enhances the response to follicle-stimulating drugs, resulting in higher quality eggs and a greater chance of pregnancy. Acupuncture alleviates side effects of drug treatments and reduces stress. For males preparation to improve sperm quality and quantity is a significant contributor to successful IVF from fertilisation rates to implantation health embryonic development.

During the IVF or IUI Treatment Cycle:

Down-regulating Phase:

Acupuncture nourishes the ovaries and promotes their growth and development during hormone regulation and ovulation control. Treatment relaxes the mind and spirit and manages side effects, both physical and emotional.

Follicle and Ovary Stimulation:

Acupuncture treats unpleasant side effects experienced during follicle stimulation and assists the ovaries in responding better to drug treatments. Patients find they need less medical intervention and/or lower dosages as their response is greater.

Pre- and Post-Embryo Transfer:

Calming the mind, spirit, and preparing the uterus before embryo transfer is essential. After transfer, treatment focuses on nourishing the uterus with vital Qi and Blood, while relaxing the uterus to prevent contractions and that may interfere with implanation.

The “two-week-wait” and early stages of pregnancy

Often an overlooked but crucial time to maintain calm, improve blood flow and encourage vital nutrients to the uterine environment.

“I started seeing Sarah around a year and a half ago to work alongside my IVF treatment. I had never had any acupuncture before and have a phobia of needles so was quite apprehensive but I found Sarah to be really lovely and approachable! I’m pleased to say that I’m finally pregnant and have just had my 12wk scan! I couldn’t be happier!! IVF was the most difficult and emotional thing I have ever had to go through but I would always feel so relaxed during and after my sessions with Sarah and I believe they had a huge influence in my success with the fertility treatment. I would sincerely recommend to anyone about the embark on IVF to book up an appointment with Sarah and I’m sure you will never look back!”

Nurturing a viable pregnancy

After successful implantation and conception, the subsequent priority is to provide adequate nourishment to the female body in order to maintain adequate blood flow and prevent miscarriage. It is concerning to note that approximately 50% of IVF/IUI conceptions result in miscarriage, which we believe is attributed to the procedure’s emphasis on quantity rather than the quality of eggs and the overall fertility health of the patient. Do also consider the original need for IVF or IUI indicating underlying deficiencies in the fertility health of either the male or female, or both, which can potentially lead to complications during pregnancy, labor, and postnatal period. In such cases, acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatment can play a crucial role in promoting the healthy development of the baby throughout the full-term of pregnancy. By providing ongoing nourishment to the fetus during these critical and early stages of growth, acupuncture and TCM contribute significantly to ensuring a favourable outcome: a happy, healthy baby.

Pregnancy and Post-partum Care

Acupuncture plays a crucial role in providing support during pregnancy and postpartum periods. Throughout pregnancy, women experience a range of physical and emotional changes, and acupuncture offers a safe and natural way to address various discomforts such as morning sickness, back pain, fatigue, and anxiety. It promotes overall well-being by balancing the body’s energy and supporting the healthy development of both mother and baby. In the postpartum phase, acupuncture helps with recovery, hormone regulation, and addressing common concerns like fatigue, postpartum depression, and lactation issues. By promoting relaxation, boosting energy, and enhancing the body’s natural healing processes, acupuncture becomes an essential tool for optimal maternal health and postpartum care.

Acupuncture points used in these stages are carefully selected to ensure they are distal, meaning they are located away from the baby or the abdominal area. This ensures the utmost safety for both the mother and the baby. As a non-invasive therapy it can really provide a reassuring and comfortable experience, offering much-needed support and relief during this transformative time.

Alleviating “morning sickness” – nausea, retching and vomiting

During the early stages of pregnancy, hormonal imbalances can lead to uncomfortable symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and retching. Fortunately, acupuncture treatment offers an effective solution. By using one or two carefully placed needles, our practitioners gently manipulate the body’s energy flow to calm the stomach and restore balance. This safe and highly effective treatment option can be pursued even in the earliest stages of pregnancy.

Turning breech babies – encouraging optimal positioning

Acupuncture and TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) present gentle and relaxing techniques to successfully turn breech babies. These techniques can even be practiced at home. By realigning the energetic forces within the uterus, the baby is encouraged to shift into the correct position smoothly and naturally. Depending on the individual case, acupuncture treatment and/or moxibustion (heat source) therapy may be recommended as part of the process.

Gentle labour induction – promoting natural progression

For overdue pregnancies, acupuncture offers a safe and effective means of gently inducing labor. By promoting the circulation of Qi (energy) and Blood, tonifying and relieving stagnation, and gently activating the uterus, our treatments gently and naturally encourage the onset of labour. It is important to note that our approach focuses on a gentle progression and does not forcefully contract the uterus.

Post-partum Care and Rejuvenation

The labour process can leave mothers feeling physically and energetically depleted, often leading to challenges in the early stages of motherhood. Sleepless nights and various stresses emphasise the importance of acupuncture and TCM, including Chinese herbal medicine, in rebuilding the body’s constitution after childbirth. Our treatments focus not only on replenishing the depleted organ system and overall energies but also on preventing common postnatal conditions such as postpartum depression, mastitis, insufficient breast lactation, and breastfeeding difficulties.

If you are experiencing any postpartum conditions or related concerns, acupuncture and TCM offer highly effective treatment options, especially when complemented with Chinese herbal medicine. These holistic approaches address the root causes of the disorders, promoting overall healing and balance. Additionally, immediately after labour, it is advisable to incorporate nourishing and tonifying medicine to replenish the mother’s strength and expedite her recovery, allowing her to meet the demands of early motherhood with resilience and vitality. We are dedicated to providing comprehensive postnatal care to support your well-being during this significant phase of life.

Acupuncture proves to be an indispensable component of your fertility journey, extending its benefits beyond postpartum care. It plays a vital role in addressing unexplained infertility, tackling root causes that may hinder conception. Furthermore, acupuncture offers promising results in treating various gynaecological disorders and improving poor semen parameters for male fertility. “I first visited Sarah about a year ago, after unsuccessfully trying to conceive for 18months. I wanted to try and regulate my cycles in order to take more control of my fertility, at this point I was ovulating every 50 days. After seeing Sarah for only two weekly sessions, I had a positive pregnancy test result. I continued to see Sarah weekly throughout my first trimester (having suffered a previous miscarriage), and found the sessions relaxing and they also helped provide relief from my awful morning sickness. I revisited Sarah at the very end of my pregnancy, as I started to fear I may go overdue. Also believing in Sarah’s capabilities I hoped the treatment, may not only induce labour, but, make it more efficient when it finally happened. After two sessions of acupuncture in my final week of pregnancy, my son was born one day after the second treatment. My labour was certainly efficient, lasting 6 hours from start to finish, meaning we had the water birthed we had hoped for and were in and out of hospital within the day… I strongly feel she helped me massively along my journey to now having my beautiful boy. I found her manner professional and approachable, and looked forward to each session as a relaxing hour in the middle of a hectic week.”
